Freezing Herbs

Freezing Herbs

Freezing-I love this method. Simply cut stems or leaves of the herbs, rinse, pat dry and freeze in resealable bags. The small ones work well or if you would like to cut whole sprigs use the large gallon size. Label and freeze-later pull out what you need and replace the unused portions. You can also freeze chopped herbs in ice cube trays with water. After they freeze remove them and store in bags. This is good for using in soups. Drying-Cut whole branches of the herb plant and tie with string or rubber bands. Hang in a dry, clean place such as an enclosed shed or attic. You can place paper sacks over the herbs as well while they are hanging to avoid dust. When they are dry, crumble into a glass or plastic container and store in a dry, cool location. I have dried entire plants this way-if they are annuals-just pull up and dry. Peppers will dry nicely with this method too. You can also dry herbs by laying on clean screens until dry. If you harvest large leaf herbs such as lovage, comfrey or large leaf basil, remove the leaves and place on screens. If using this method, turn the herbs during the first few days. You can also dry in a very low temperature in the oven on cookie sheets. Watch carefully and turn often.

Empowering your Personal Computer for Magic

Your computer may be charged and used as a magical tool. Cleanse
the computer with a smudging of sage or sweet grass, then consecrate
it to the four elements. Take a bit of sandalwood oil and anoint it
in various spots. Charge a purple candle with intent of spirit, and
light it directly in front of the monitor. Place clear quartz stones
around your computer, and say it is to be used for magic. When you
wish to use the computer, set your altar up directly in front of the
monitor and set your screensaver to show the spell words repeatedly.
Light a candle if the spell calls for it, and leave your computer to
its assigned job.

Speleotherapy: Salt Crystal Rocks
Salt Crystal Rocks improve air qualities by enriching air with Negative
Ions. Salt Crystal Rock and lamps/candles made from Salt Crystal Rocks
are natural air ionizers.

Just put the Salt Crystals chunks on the bowl above the light, and you
have your own Salt Light Bowl, just as you see in our picture. As the
salt warms up it will produce the negative ions, to help improuve the
air quality and air born bacteria. This is the same Salt Crystal Rock
added. The crystal come from salt mines deep in the ground as do all our
salt crystal products. The crystal rock will NOT melt or loose it's
volume with time.

For centuries people know about ability of Salt Crystal Rock to improve
air qualities by enriching air with " Negative Ions " and ionized air beneficial to
humans. Salt Crystal Rock and lamps made from Salt Crystal Rocks are
natural air ionizers. Negative Ions produced by Salt Crystal Lamps
effectively, and naturally improve the quality of the air by producing negative
ions - the "Vitamins Of The Air". Negative ions can be found in nature,
concentrated in air by the billions; on Mountain Tops after Thunder
Storms, near water falls, forests, and by the Sea. Negative Ions give the
air its invigorating freshness, airborne bacteria free, clean which is
so beneficial for humans .

Non-illuminated crystals (cool Salt Crystal, underground Salt Mines)
produce Negative Ionizing effect, however the Salt Crystal Lamps which
are illuminated from inside with a lamp (warm Salt Crystal) produces and
emits a higher number of Negative Ions and delivers a more efficient
Ionizing Effect. Today, the health benefits of Negative Ionizers are well
recognized all over the world. While most ionizers on the market are
man-made machines, the Salt Crystal Lamps are a beautiful, less costly,
maintenance free, natural alternative of Mother Nature's to improve air
quality. With time, the Salt Crystal Lamps will not reduce in size,
color or shape, and will not loose weight, or their ionizing effect!

Beside Air Ionization and Negative Ions production, Salt lamps
Illuminated by a light bulb, also produce a beautiful, pleasant to the eyes,
mind, and sole, natural Glow of different colors and shades from orange
to yellow. This Light Color Glow and Ionized, Clean, Fresh Air create a
special atmosphere of calming meditative balance, tranquillity, peace
and well - being for humans.

Many people in Europe and Australia are aware of the benefits of
negative ions to our health. These negative Ions are essential for our health
and well being. The freshness of the air after a thunderstorm, on a
mountain top, or by the seaside, are due to the high concentration of
negative ions in the air. On the other hand, the reduced well being one
feels in highly polluted areas, cars, factory smog, artificially air
conditioned offices, or when certain hot dry wind conditions exist, are
usually due to an unduly low negative ion balance (and therefore high
proportion of positive ions).

CONJUNCTION is the fourth of the seven operations of alchemy.

Chemically

, it is the recombination of the saved elements from Separation into a new substance. In the Arcanum Experiment, Conjunction is symbolized by a nitrate compound known as cubic-saltpeter or potassium nitrate, which the alchemists called Natron or simply Salt. Blue-colored Natron acid (aqua fortis) was made by mixing potassium nitrate with sulfuric acid and was used to separate silver from gold. The inert residue precipitated from the acid during the reaction like a child being born.

http://www.alchemylab.com/conjunction_drawings.htmPsychologically

, it is empowerment of our true selves, the union of both the masculine and feminine sides of our personalities into a new belief system or an intuitive state of consciousness. The alchemists referred to it as the Lesser Stone, and after it is achieved, the adept is able to clearly discern what needs to be done to achieve lasting enlightenment, which is union with the Overself. Often, synchronicities begin to occur that confirm the alchemist is on the right track.

Physiologically, Conjunction is using the body’s sexual energies for personal transformation. Conjunction takes place in the body at the level of the Heart or Copper Chakra.

In Society, it is the growth of crafts and technology to master the environment.

On the Planetary level, Conjunction occurs when primordial life forms are created from the energy of the Sun or lightning.

CORRESPONDENCES OF CONJUNCTION

Soul Mates
According to Celtic wisdom, our souls begin their journey together  as one being that becomes broken apart. Through this, two souls  emerge and move on into their journeys. Throughout time, we  unconsciously seek to rejoin our Soul mate; that which was created  as our perfect match. Between the two Souls, there is a world of understanding that often does not even need to be shared through spoken word. Soul mates can even reach a level of psychic communication, such as identical twins share.  Physical union of the souls reaches heights of awareness beyond  common intimacy. Sharing each other's bodies becomes exactly  that... "Sharing". Mutual love and satisfaction can be achieved  with this mate to your Soul.  Anam Cara is the Celtic word for "Soul Friend", and throughout our  lifetimes we also unconsciously search for people who are our Anam  Cara. Often we find relevant qualities in others that make us feel an Anam Cara with them. Truly touching the Soul of another and  sharing allows us to become Anam Cara. This is a level that can be reached with people you mentor, revere, need, or enjoy in your life. Your Soul mate however, reaches beyond the soul sharing of Anam Cara, and becomes a state of completion between the two Souls. The search should never be rushed or sought after; for in desperation  you may overlook and rush past the very Soul that is your match. Don't worry that your life path seems to be leading you astray, for sometimes that is exactly the place you will find your Soul mate.  Adversity to your Soul can create openings that allow your Soul mate to find you, and thus allow the two Souls to join together.  Tumultuous times and periods of adversity often lead to  enlightenment, and new beginnings  When you meet your soul mate, this person will have an immediate  affect on you. A Soul Mate is someone who makes your knees go weak and you will want to catch your breath. With a single glance they  lessen your burden and a smile warms your heart. You will feel a  connection with this person. They will touch you so deeply on so  many levels, you will want to share your inner most secrets. Once  you have met your Soul Mate your life will never be the same. The  one thing, which makes this unique, is the sense of a significant  spiritual experience. Normally it is several months, weeks or days before physical  intimacy occurs. But when you meet your Soul Mate something  happens. The pull, the drive to become physically intimate  overwhelms and you will find it happening in the initial meeting.  There's a sense of security with this person. You knowingly let go of your defences, as an empathic bond is formed. Unlike other  relationships in the past, there will be no game playing or hidden  agendas, which plagued you in the past. There is something about  the passion that you share with your Soul Mate. Its breadth goes  beyond just "body parts". For a moment in time you two are the only ones who exist in the universe.  Hearts beat in rhythm as your souls entwine themselves becoming one.  Your personal energies meld and you feel the flame of creation move  through you - like a wave of the ocean in a tempest. Soon you begin to lose track of where you begin and your partner ends. From within the depths of your raw passionate union, your Soul Mate will  know how and where to touch you. It will be different, intense and more gratifying than lovers of your past.  They will look into your eyes and you will feel your soul open wide. There is a rush. All the love, all the passion, all the need, will surge forth from your soul. At this moment you will know what it means to get lost within someone's eyes. You will experience a touch you have never felt before and your passion will rise to new  levels. Your Soul Mate will be able to make love with you in ways no one else will ever be able to match or be allowed.  Most of us know the basic meaning of the words Soul Mate and some  even know the myth...I don't remember the full story but it  basically goes that at one time in history, souls were neither  male nor female but a combined spirit, completely happy and   fulfilled.  The part I don't remember is why, but due to someone or thing's  jealousy, these souls were split into male and female. After the separation, both parts of the soul realised that they weren't as  happy and fulfilled after the separation and so went in search of their other half. This search is repeated over many lifetimes and  sometimes the two halves do not ever find each other. When they do find each other the result is true love

Weight Loss and Crystals

To obtain successful weight loss, you must apply this rule: "Eat
less and exercise more."

Sure, this is much easier said than done, but the fact remains that
none of the fad diets or supposed breakthroughs in weight control
have made any difference in the epidemic of obesity.

Be in tune to the total calories you consume daily, and make an
effort to replace high-fat foods with low-calorie ones like
vegetables and fruits.

You must try to eat low on the glycemic (sugar) index, in order to
avoid highs and lows in your blood sugar that can lead to increased
insulin production and conversion of calories to fat.
Alcohol is fattening, since it can't be stored by the body and burns
up right away, increasing the likelihood that the food you eat while
you're drinking will turn into fat.

Remember that dietary supplements or "fat-burning herbs" are really
just stimulants that reduce appetite and speed metabolism. As soon as
you stop taking them, odds are that any pounds lost will come back.

Exercise is crucial to successful weight loss. Not only does it help
burn excess calories, but by increasing your physical activity you
can modify the way your brain regulates hunger, making you less
susceptible to food cravings.

Vitamin therapy is a good way to help your body regulate what you may
not be getting through your diet. A good daily multivitamin is the
best start.

Your belief system has everything to do with the mental and spiritual
aspects of weight control. Fight anxiety with relaxation exercises
rather than food. Utilize meditation, yoga, stretching. By creating
healthy eating habits and regular exercise, you are sure to lose
weight without depriving yourself of nourishing food. And if you
continue those good habits after you reach your goal, you will have
an excellent chance of maintaining your desired weight and see it
more as maintaining a lifestyle as opposed to a diet.

EXERCISE

Exercise is crucial to successful weight loss. Not only does it help
burn excess calories, but by increasing your physical activity you
can modify the way your brain regulates hunger, making you less
susceptible to food cravings. Consider Power walking, Aerobics,
Swimming or any cardiovascular exercise that you do consistantly for
20-40 minutes. It is important to keep the heart rate up in your
target zone during this time in order for cardio exercise to work
effectively. See a doctor before starting any kind of exercise
program if you have never exercised before or have any other
illnesses.

Harmony With Nature
Organic Earth

The earth is our nurturer, giving us life, land, and sustenance. Because of population growth, the demand for her gifts is ever increasing and simply living from day to day can now have a negative impact on the balance of nature. The byproduct of many needs is the release of toxic substances into the water, air, and soil. One way to minimize your impact on the earth is to try and use organic products as much as possible and to garden organically yourself if you have space. Though organic fruits and vegetables have become popular, the term "organic" can apply to any product produced from natural substances, including cloth and beauty items. Organic farming promotes a healthy earth, clean water, and healthy people.

Organic products are created using natural ingredients that were grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers; haven't been treated with preservatives, hormones, or medicines; and don't contain artificial additives. Using organic products whenever possible not only helps lessen your exposure to harmful chemicals but also helps the health of mother earth as well. Organic farming uses helpful insects to combat pests and natural fertilizers like compost and manure, or crop rotation, to keep vital nutrients in the soil. Healthy soil contains microbes beneficial to plants and thick earthy hummus that retains water, reducing the need for artificial irrigation and the rate of top soil erosion. The benefits of using organic products go far beyond health concerns. Organic farming promotes necessary biodiversity through seed collecting and by encouraging wildlife to thrive alongside humans.

We have only just recently begun to understand the effects of chemical-intensive growing on the environment. Organic farming of vegetables, cotton, or any other crop, is a gentle way to reap the earth's bounty and is conducive to a healthy ecosystem. Sometimes the results are slightly more expensive, but the environmental and health costs can be much higher and increased demand for such products can help to lower prices. Your use of organic products encourages a world where birds and insects help control pests, wildlife is an essential part of farming, and nutrition takes precedence over mass production.

White Candle

A WHITE CANDLE RITUAL TO ATTRACT LOVE

Here is a white candle love spell I was taught by a friend, Miriam
Singer, who had it from another woman many years ago. It was given to me as a "woman's spell," possibly because of the phallic shape of the candle, but I see no reason a man could not perform it:

Get a white candle that will burn down in due time. You will have
to inscribe it (see below), so it should be bigger than a birthday
candle, and you will also have to watch it burn down to nothing (see below), so it should not be a 24 hour votive light. A plain white altar candle or, better yet, a white "bride and groom" figural candle, will be right.

Prepare an altar and decorate it with those things precious to you
and to the one you love. Using a rose thorn from a white rose bush,
inscribe the words "All my love come to me" 3 times on the candle. Place the inscribed candle in the center of the altar and light it. For the entire time the candle burns, gaze upon it and visualize your love coming to you in nakedness and beauty. When the candle burns out, collect the wax puddle that remains, wrap it up with the mementos from the altar and keep it in a safe place.

The result of this spell will not be "zombie" or "victim"
thrall-love; but you will receive ALL the love that person has for you -- which may be less than, as much as, or more than the love you have for him. Accept the degree of love you receive with grace and tenderness.

If at some future time you no longer wish to receive that man's
love, dispose of the wax puddle in a simple ceremonial way. Depending on your mood, it can be burned on a fire, buried, thrown into running water, mailed to him, ground to shavings and baked into a cake -- or whatever you feel is appropriate. But it is your responsibility to dispose of it if you no longer want to be loved in any degree by that man.

LUNA
Diana, or Luna, Roman goddess of the Moon, animals, and hunting (earth’s moon).   # Called Luna by the Romans, Selene and Artemis by the Greeks, and many other names in other mythologies.
# The twin sister of Apollo was Artemis; also known as Diana, Phoebe, Selene, or Cynthia; goddess of the Moon, of maidens, of hunting (the chase), and daughter of Zeus and Latona.
# In works of art, this goddess is generally represented as a beautiful maiden, clad in a short hunting dress, armed with a bow, a quiver full of arrows at her side, and a crescent on her well-poised head.
# The sudden deaths of women were attributed to her shafts; but, she was, also, a goddess of healing.
# She was often represented as a huntress, with hunting dogs and a boar’s head at her side.
# Diana is described as guiding her silvery chariot over the sky at night.
She had three aspects: Diana in the heavens, Luna on earth, and Hecate, goddess of witchcraft, in the underworld.

Invocation of Personal Death
by Frater Mot

This invocation of one's own personal death is constructed for the purpose of recognizing the entity of death, to understand and bind that moment when all other moments are rendered useless, null and void. If approached and seized by this spectre while in a state of rest and ignorance the entirety of ones existence can be rendered moot. But if confronted and bound insight can be gained into the key of one's existence and the key to that same liberation.

Needed for this ritual is a slow, daunting, atonal, rhythm. Any form of a excitatory gnostic state (for this particular instance we will use the Bali Ball Dance {we are trying to concentrate the role of existence and its nullification - action followed by stillness}). Any and all forms and images of death both personal and universal (films, pictures, smells). A few different colors of paint and a large canvas.

The players needed will be a person/persons to assume the role of their "space", their physical formula and to invoke their death, a priest/priestess to recite the proper invocation, and a few extras to assume the role of time, throwing paint as the simulation of time.

Statement of Intent: It is my will to invoke that moment of my personal death so that I may bind it through sigil and master it, thereby helping to master myself.

Roll music. Roll images. Begin piercings.

Priest: "This world we are brought into is a world of thought
solidified. Every moment is a thought captured by the hands of death. While we live upon this earth and surrender to the hands of death nothing is our own. We accumulate moments like the cheap souvenir trash of a Daytona Beach mistake. And we grow, through the years, the moments of exponential deceit, to believe in these stolen thought forms, to believe in the slowness of manifest life; to believe in the nurturing of our own personal death. This death constructed, sculpted by our own
hands, and our hands our guided by Death. Every moment the clock ticks louder growing thick in the echo chamber of production and management yet it is that very race the causes this lie to escape us. We do not have to die. We do not have to surrender to this game. But in order to truly live we must first make death our own.

Every needle that enters under your skin is another moment solidified.
Another gain, another loss, another person telling you what direction your life must take. Every needle that burrows under your skin is another year of your life, another corner refined on the sculpture of your death. That needle breaking the skin is a hint of death. A tease creating reflexes in your mind that will allow that final moment its power. Do you feel the moments ticking away? Do you believe what you see?
You have been taught to play this lie. Everything you have learned has been given only to be used against you.
There is another year of your life. 8,760 hours used against you.
525,600 minutes more towards your death. 2,000 people - all liars -
whom you have interacted with. How many miles have you walked? How many words have you spoken towards your death? 900 meals feeding that moment. And millions of images.
Can you here the clock ticking your dirge? That is death smiling at your obedience. Your only choice is death. The only road out of this outhouse is to make that death your own.
Think of all the times you have made a mistake. What caused that mistake? Maybe you were too hasty, maybe you were to sure of what you could do. And why were you so sure? Because of the lies told before.
What caused that mistake?
Think of the moment that is most impressed in your mind. What happened?
Why was that moment so important to you? Were you made to feel sure of yourself? Did you feel important? Needed? Were you happy? Were you sad? Did you feel anything at all? See that moment. It is a lie.
Think of a success you are proud of? Why are you proud of it? Why do you call it a success? How did you feel when you achieved that success?
See it. That success is a lie.
In fact all your successes and failures are lies, totems of a dirty joke played against your mortal soul. And every moment is a needle underneath your skin. Feel those moments ticking away.

PHOGOLOA the entirety of spirit we call you so that we may know our death.
ERDENEU the manifestation of moment we call you so that we may know our death.

METHOR PARY PHEZER THAPSAMYDO MAROMI CHELOPSA
we call your most exalted name and title so that we may see our death and know and understand it. This is our will and is shall be done. SO MOTE IT BE!

At this point the subjects should be in a steady state of fury and
disjointed excitement. The people representing time should be throwing paint upon the participants and screaming that these people are their slaves, etc.
At the appropriate time the subjects will fall to the ground motionless at which time they will see their death. When this happens the extras should banish their role of time and coddle the participants (without interfering too much!) wrapping them in canvas to create a sigil of the participants death.

Banish and close temple.

Comfort Herbs
by Meg McGowan

Conscious Choice, January 1999

Winter does not allow us to take life for granted. The contours of our world actually change as snow renders the familiar, unfamiliar. The complacent patterns of our lives are subject to change as well. Nature challenges the assumptions that order our days -- assumptions that the car will start, that we will go to work, that the children will go to school; that our homes will be lit and heated; that we can communicate with the rest of the world from our homes; that we will continue to order our lives unaffected by the capricious whims of the natural world.

Other seasons occasionally draw or demand our attention, but only winter insists, day after day, on its due. Comfort and health are challenged as part of the accepted status quo. Outdoor activities leave you damp and sweaty, ripe for a chill as the sun goes down and the wind picks up. Muscles tense in response to the cold, becoming achy and tight. Germs enclosed in stagnant air thrive and multiply. Forced air heat dries out skin and nasal passages.

What's the best way to respond to these challenges? Relax. Change with the season. Try to get more exercise and more sleep. Heed the advice of Hippocrates: "The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day."

When feet are cold and wet, soaking them in an herbal foot bath boosts your immune system along with your comfort level. Melatonin, known as the "sleep hormone," is integral to the immune system and the most effective antioxidant known to date. It's produced in response to a raised body temperature in an effort to reduce it. A hot foot bath, therefore, stimulates the production of melatonin, which in turn enhances immune system functioning. (Folklore holds that it is impossible to fall asleep with cold feet. Feet may act as the bodies thermostat, so if they are cold, melatonin, the key to dreamland, is not produced.) It is thought that a foot bath to combat chill should use water that is as hot you can comfortably stand -- the theory being: the warmer the water, the larger the surge of melatonin required to bring the body temperature back into balance.

Water for a foot bath should cover the ankles, if possible. Dried herbs may be added to a foot bath at the outset, while water is hot enough to release their volatile oils. Alternatively, dried herbs may be steeped in boiling water first, creating an infusion. Add an infusion, essential oils, or bath salts to the water after it has cooled to warm. While the water is exremely hot, feet are perspiring, a condition at odds with soaking up herbal benefits. Also, hot water causes the volatile oils to dissipate too quickly. (Whichever method you choose, drape a large towel or blanket over your knees, creating a tent to contain the oils for absorption.)

If feet are tired and cold, use a combination of herbs to soothe and rejuvenate. Lavender, lemon, and peppermint possess both relaxing and stimulating qualities, making them ideally suited for reviving abused feet. Sage has both calming and stimulating effects on the central nervous system, as well as a welcome deodorizing effect.
Rosemary stimulates circulation and the adrenal glands. Include it in a revitalizing soak to assuage aching muscles. Eucalyptus, another warming herb, also stimulates blood flow and eases soreness in joints and muscles. In cases of respiratory illness, eucalyptus might be combined with camphor and thyme, which are warming, stimulating and used as remedies for chest infections.

As a general rule for baths (foot or body), use a total of approximately one-half cup dried herbs. Essential oils may be added or used instead of dried herbs; five to eight drops are recommended. Sea salt or Epsom salts may be added, along with baking soda. Try one-half cup of each.

While a hot bath may increase melatonin production, the rest of the body is not as tolerant of hot water as are the feet. For full-body baths, warm water is best. Hot water is also very drying to the skin. Winter winds outside and forced air heat inside tend to deplete more than enough moisture from the skin, so consider adding soothing and nourishing essential oils to your bath such as carrot, geranium, German chamomile, lavender, patchouli and rose.

If you are suffering from congestion or stuffy sinuses, combine essential oils and herbs that offer multiple benefits. Elderflowers are traditionally used externally for rheumatic aches, and internally for coughs, colds, congestion, and allergies.

While not known to be a substitute for consuming therapeutic doses of herbs internally, bathing allows some measure of the herb's benefits to be absorbed by the skin and inhaled in the steam of the bath. Similarly, marsh mallow soothes both inflamed skin and painful sinuses. Marjoram and oregano are used to treat muscular pain, respiratory problems and colds. Likewise, pine helps to ease rheumatism, muscular aches and pains, sore throats, respiratory ailments and colds. Always use caution in both the temperature of your bath and any herbs you use, internally or externally, if you are pregnant.

In The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies (Harmony, 1998), Vasant Lad suggests "a hot ginger powder-baking soda bath (two-thirds cup baking soda and one-fourth cup ginger per tubful of water) is also effective for muscle relaxation."

If you are purchasing herbal bath preparations, look for companies that are conscientious about what they put in their products as well as what they leave out. Burt's Bees, for example, states that they "leave out the petroleum-synthesized fillers like mineral oil and propylene glycol," and they "don't use artificial preservatives such as methyl paraben or diazolidiny urea." What they do include are herbs, flowers, botanical oils, beeswax, essential oils, and clay. Look for their Rebound line to soothe overused muscles and their Green Goddess line for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Bloom uses pure ingredients in their Tub Tonics, which are ready-to-fizz combinations of citric acid, sea salt, baking soda and essential oils. Fragrances include Energy, Purity, Tranquillity and Harmony. Bloom's Green Tea Warming Foot Soak incorporates lavender, chamomile, calendula and other herbs into a blend with green tea.

Annapurna Herb Shop in Evanston carries muslin bags of herbs for the tub from WiseWays Herbals, a small company in Worthington, Massachusetts, which uses only organic herbs or those that are ecologically wildcrafted. They don't use synthetic chemicals or preservatives or do animal testing. Annapurna also carries bulk herbs and small muslin bags, if you prefer to create your own blend.

Take the same care in storing herbs for the bath that you take in storing herbs for cooking or medicinal purposes. Protect herbal products from heat, light and dampness and keep them tightly sealed to preserve their therapeutic value.

This winter, try acquiescing to the inevitable. Leave room in your life to go with the flow. Avoid the stress (and certain illness) that comes from insisting on your own way. Questioning what is allows room for what might be. In this season of gray and white space, envision your direction for the new year beyond a series of successfully navigated obstacles -- and remember, obstacles are not always what they seem.

Stillness In Motion
Doing Things Slowly

Life can often feel like it's zipping by in fast forward. We feel obliged to accelerate our own speed along with it, until our productivity turns into frenzied accomplishment. We find ourselves cramming as much activity as possible into the shortest periods of time. We disregard our natural rhythms because it seems we have to just to keep up. In truth, rushing never gets you anywhere but on to the next activity or goal.

Slowing down allows you to not only savor your experiences, but also it allows you to fully focus your attention and energy on the task at hand. Moving at a slower place lets you get things done more efficiently, while rushing diminishes the quality of your work and your relationships. Slowing down also lets you be more mindful, deliberate, and fully present. When we slow down, we are giving ourselves the opportunity to reacquaint ourselves to our natural rhythms. We let go of the "fast forward" stress, and allow our bodies to remain centered and grounded. Slowing down is inherent to fully savoring anything in life. Rushing to take a bath can feel like an uncomfortable dunk in hot water, while taking a slow hot bath can be luxuriant and relaxing. A student cramming for a test will often feel tired and unsure, whereas someone who really absorbs the information will be more confident and relaxed. Cooking, eating, reading, and writing can become pleasurable when done slowly. ! Slowing down lets you become more absorbed in whatever it is you are doing. The food you eat tastes better, and the stories you read become more alive.

Slowing down allows you to disconnect from the frenzied pace buzzing around you so you can begin moving at your own pace. The moments we choose to live in fast forward motion then become a conscious choice rather than an involuntary action. Learning to slow down in our fast-moving world can take practice, but if you slow down long enough to try it, you may surprise yourself with how natural and organic living at this pace can be.

valuing the Moment

http://www.ladyraya.org/magick/images/runes/wyn.gif

"Valuing The Moment"

"... the only time you ever have in which to learn anything or see anything or feel anything, or express any feeling or emotion, or respond to an event, or grow, or heal, is this moment, because this is the only moment any of us ever gets. You’re only here now; you’re only alive in this moment."
-- Jon Kabat-Zinn

Many people regularly squander their time. They live under the assumption that they'll live forever. As a result, they don't value the present as a precious opportunity that will never come again.

Others continually race against time, trying to cram too many activities into each hour, and suffering stress in the process.

In our view, we are more effective and most happy when we balance being and doing. We continually ask ourselves what’s most important to get done. And we’re learning to BE -- fully present -- when we do. We also regularly give ourselves permission to relax.

Make today really matter. It's all you'll ever have.

"Very few of us know how much we can put into life if we use it properly, wisely, and economically. Let us economize our time -- lifetimes ebb away before we wake up, and that is why we do not realize the value of the immortal time God has given us."
-- Paramahansa Yogananda

Mabon
Autumn Equinox, 2nd Harvest, September 22nd
(pronounced MAY-bun, MAY-bone, MAH-boon, or MAH-bawn)
The Autumn Equinox divides the day and night equally, and we all take a moment to pay our respects to the impending dark. We also give thanks to the waning sunlight, as we store our harvest of this year's crops. The Druids call this celebration, Mea'n Fo'mhair, and honor the The Green Man, the God of the Forest, by offering libations to trees. Offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are appropriate at this time. Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth.

Various other names for this Lesser Wiccan Sabbat are The Second Harvest Festival, Wine Harvest, Feast of Avalon, Equinozio di Autunno (Strega), Alben Elfed (Caledonii), or Cornucopia. The Teutonic name, Winter Finding, spans a period of time from the Sabbat to Oct. 15th, Winter's Night, which is the Norse New Year.

At this festival it is appropriate to wear all of your finery and dine and celebrate in a lavish setting. It is the drawing to and of family as we prepare for the winding down of the year at Samhain. It is a time to finish old business as we ready for a period of rest, relaxation, and reflection.

She-Devils and Wily Dark Angels
Mistress McCutchan
The concept of hell is a relatively late Christian invention. It begins with the fall of the mightiest of the Seraphim angels, Satan. He has been depicted as a monsterous, multi-winged creature in Dante’s Inferno and an elegant and beautiful character in Milton’s Paradise Lost. Christian mythology modeled Satan very much after the pagan Pan, a satyr with horns and hooves.
He has gone under many aliases: Abaddon, Sammael, Beliel, Beelzebub, Azazel, Mastema, Lucifer, and Mephistopheles. The once “Bearer of Light” is ruler of all of the underworld and its inhabitants. According to the legend of the fall of Satan from Heaven, Satan refused to bow before God’s creation of Man and because of this poor criticism to the Divine sculptor, God flung Satan to Hell and a third of the angels left with him.
Now, the “devil” and “demons” are often described as being male. But what about the all powerful “deadlier of the species”?
This listing is of Angels, She-Demons and Dark Goddesses who were seen as evil in the eyes of Christianity, and in several cases, they may or may not have truly been “evil”.
Astarte : Originally the Creating and Destroying Goddess of the Indo-Europeans. She was know to the Egyptians as Athstar, “Venus in the Morning”; in Aramaic she is the “Morning Star of Heaven”. As Astroarche, “Queen of the Stars”, she ruled all the spirits of the dead whose astral bodies could be seen as stars. In medieval Christian times, Astarte-Astaroth was made a male demon.
Proserpine : Originally the Greek “Queen of the Underworld”, she is the blood-thirsty, destruction goddess Kali of India. In Christian traditions she is “Queen of the She-Demons”.
Barbelo : According to the gnostics, was the procreator of the superior angels. Barbelo was so perfect in glory that it was rumored that she even outshone the Father in Heaven. Her crime that put her on the fallen angel list was a few sharp and unkind words to Yahweh when he boasted of being the Creator.
Lilith : The first wife of Adam and mother to the Lilim, the race of succubi. The Lilim preyed upon men, seducing them in their sleep.
Naamah : meaning “pleasurable”, she is the most sensual and sexual of Satan’s brides and the greatest seductress of men and demons. She is also mother of Asmodeus, who was originally a Persian deity. Asmodeus fought the archangel Raphael almost to a standstill before Raphael managed to banish him to Upper Egypt from where he made his way to Hell.
Leviathan : The coiled chaos she-dragon, whose fins are said to be so brilliant they obscure the sun. Masculinized by medieval writers as the “king of the children of pride”.
Agrat-bat-Mahlaht and Eisheth Zenunim : both angels of prostitutes.
Isis : A curious slip by the medieval Church. Originally Isis was the Egyptian goddess born from the union of the earth and the sky. This great Mother Goddess suffered the fate of any figure not mentioned in the Bible. If a particular being wasn’t mentioned in the Bible, it must be a demon. All the more advantage to Hell.

SPELL A DAY

Hearth Warming Spell
September 22nd, 2005

Color of the day: Green
Incense of the day: Dill

The Fall Equinox gives us our second balancing point in the year. It also means the last of the harvest will soon be taken in. From this night onward the veil that separates our world from the spirit world grows ever thinner until, by Samhain, it will be open for all to pass through. In Welsh legends the land of the dead is in the western sea. To reach it you first had to pass several challengers along your path through Avalon, the vast orchard of apples that guarded and guided travelers. Apples are a gift from the dead and the deities. Their orchard guards the pathway to the schools of magic and the land of the dead beyond. To make your home a happy place to be, take a big red apple and slice it crossways so you can see the the five-pointed star within. Remove the seeds and keep them away from children and pets. They contain trace amounts of cyanide, a deadly poison. Cover the entire white part of the apple by sticking cloves into it. Cloves are for protection and health. Place
these in a 200-degree oven until they start to curl at the edges. Remove them from the heat and place them in a small glass bowl so their scent fills your home. Say:
Bless’d be the apple tree. Protected with the cloves we be.

Breath. Hole in centre of room. Descend. Staircase lit from within. Descend.

Emerge in mountains. Feel wind on skin, hear wind, bird calls, see clouds, birds? Breathe in - taste and smell clear, pure air. Listen. Can hear? Can sense? Being? What say to you?

Turn into bird - Eagle, dove, raven, magpie, whatever. Swoop down.

Volcano below. Down. Stand near lava flow. Feel heat on skin, hear crackle, see flames dance, red heat of lava. Orange, red, what else? Breathe in - taste and smell. Sulphur, ash? Heat in lungs. Not burn you. Listen. Can hear? Can sense? Being? What say to you?

Turn into flame and dance on lava. Down...Follow the lava flow into sea. Quenched. Steam. Cool. Wet. Become fish. Swim. Feel wet on skin, hear bubble and rush of surf, and see water - what colour? See fish, seaweed. Can't breath in, but taste water - salt or fresh? Swim to shore. Sit in waves on the shore. Listen. Can hear? Can sense? Being? What say to you?

Stand. Turn. Mountain. Walk. Feel firm earth. Hear crunch of sand, earth, rock or pebbles. Cave. Big rock. Sit with rock in entrance or go into cave. See? Rock or dark cave. Feel rock. Hard. Smooth? Rough? Warm or cold? Touch with tongue. Salt? Bitter? What taste or rock? Listen. Can hear? Can sense? Being? What say to you? What say to you?

See an opening in rock wall. Walk to it. Enter. Spiral stairs up. Up. Up. Light. Room again.

Come back to self in own time. Say name three times. Pat yourself.

Thinking Like A MountainA deep chesty bawl echoes fromrimrock to rimrock, rolls down themountain, and fades into the farblackness of the night. It is anoutburst of wild defiant sorrow, and of contempt for all theadversities of the world...Ittingles the spine of all who hearwolves by night, or who scantheir tracks by day. Only themountain has lived longenough to listen objectivelyto the howl of the wolf......We reached the old wolf intime to see a fierce green firedying in her eyes. I realizedthen and have known ever since, that there was something new tome in those eyes, something knownonly to her and the mountain.Aldo Leopold

Walking Meditation in Praxis:

  General:
Walking is suitable for insight meditations (vipassana), but not
optimal for
calmness mediations (samatha), because of the inherent active bodily
unrest.
Development of deeper states of tranquillity & attainment of the
absorptions
  (jhana) is difficult while walking.

  Suitable Walking Meditation Objects:
Remembrance & recollection of Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha, Morality,
Generosity,
Devas, Impermanence, Suffering, Impersonality, Peace, Body Organs,
Decaying
Corpse, Skeleton & Disgust with all Worldly are suitable for walking
meditation.
The 4 Infinite States: Friendliness, Pity, Sympathy & Equanimity,
defining of the
4 Primary Elements: Solid Extension, Fluid Cohesion, Vibrating Heat &
Energetic
Motion are suitable for walking meditation. The four Foundations of
Awareness:
Body as mere forms, feeling as mere responses, mind as mere moods,
phenomena
as mere mental states. Awareness & clear comprehension of current
activity and
perception of repulsiveness in food are also quite suitable for
walking meditation.

Personal Characters suited for walking meditation:
The passionate, greedy & desirous nature and the speculative
character are both
well suited for walking meditation. The angry, aversive & easily
irritated person
should not walk, but do mainly the 4 good-will meditations either
sitting or lying.

  Hop to Practice:
Calm forward walking, clearly aware, conscious, collected &
comprehending, on
an unobstructed, simple, flat surface, either in rounds or back &
forth. The mind
should be firmly fixed & anchored on the meditation object. Whenever
it strays
into a distraction, it should be hauled back & re-established on the
current object,
which not should be left or given up before completed. The gaze
should be 1-2 m.
downward in front of the feet. Ultra-slow or other
Monty-Python-John-Gleese
like modes of walking should be avoided. The body should be relaxed &
at ease,
since it is the enhanced focus of the mind, which is important here,
and not the
movements of the frame.  Duration: Beginner = 45 min. Advanced: ~ 1-3
hours..

  When to do walking meditation?
1: When the mind is lax, lethargic or lazy. Slow & Low
2: When the mind is overly agitated & restless. High & Tense.
3: When the mind is overcome by profuse worry & recurring regrets.

  Tricks of the Trade:
One should 'Carry' the meditation object as if closely followed by a
tall, strong
man with a sharp sword, drawn & raised, ready to chop of one's head
right at the
moment one 'Loose' awareness of the meditation object & strays into
distraction...!
Whenever that happens, then one should note it..., go back to where
it happened &
'Pick Up' the meditation object exactly where & whenever it is lost.

Keep on keeping on: The blessed Buddha repeatedly said:
'Friends, here are plenty of tree-roots, caves, forests, parks, open
spaces, empty
places and remote lonely huts. Meditate right now or else you may
regret it later...'

Being Frank
Constructive Confrontation

Pointing out a fault or misstep in someone is often uncomfortable, draining, or stressful. It can be easier to overlook a problem than to confront the individual behind it. But just as everything in the universe has a positive and negative side, confrontation can be beneficial when handled one way or detrimental when handled in another way. If you accept that there is no winner or loser in a confrontation, and that it is merely a step in reaching a constructive solution, you can harness confrontation as a means of inspiring positive change. Sometimes the only way to show a person how they are doing you or themselves harm is to candidly express the consequences of their actions. In fact, confrontation, when handled in a calm and timely fashion, can be an act of caring.

If you find you shy away from confrontation, seeing it as an opportunity to help someone else may make it more bearable. To be willing to confront someone demonstrates your desire to maintain an open discourse with them, even if they don't initially see it as such. Naturally, in confronting someone, because you are openly discussing negative aspects of their behavior, you run the risk of offending them. But there are steps you can take to remove the sting from a confrontation. Remember that confrontation is nothing more than an opportunity for frank communication. Prepare beforehand by compiling a mental list of the facts surrounding the issue behind the confrontation. You may want to rehearse your opening statement to yourself, if it will make you feel more at ease. Finally, after discussing the behavior you are unhappy with in clear terms, give the other person a chance to respond without interrupting.

Maintaining a calm demeanor can turn a confrontation into a constructive conversation. Positive confrontation can be a learning experience for both parties, because it involves openly and bravely facing an issue. When most effective, both parties will come away from a confrontation feeling satisfied that they can move forward, changed for the better.

Current affairs

Current Affairs is a genre of a broadcast journalism format where the emphasis is on detailed analysis and discussion of news stories that have been recently occurred or are ongoing at the time of broadcast.

This differs from regular news broadcasts where the emphasis is on news reports presented for simple presentation as soon as possible, often with a minimum of analysis. It is also different for the newsmagazine show format in that the events are discussed immediately.

Remember that the first step in spirituality is not to speak ill of others. All human beings have weaknesses and faults. Yet they are all God in their being. Until they become Realized, they have their imperfections. Therefore, before trying to find faults in others and speaking ill of them, try to find your own weaknesses and correct those.
